Welcome

If you've found your way here, welcome.

My name is Bradley Carter. I'm an artist, author, and event director based in Wilmington, North Carolina. For more than two decades, I've made my living creating art, organizing exhibitions, and helping connect artists with their communities. Along the way I've had the privilege of exhibiting my work nationally, seeing it collected around the world, and even appearing in film and television productions. I also founded ARTnNCevents, where I organize local, regional, and national art exhibitions because I believe great art has the power to bring people together.

But this blog isn't just about paintings.

It's about the stories behind them.

For years I've been fascinated by the relationships that shape our lives. The conversations we never forget. The friendships that survive distance and time. The dreams we chase, the ones we abandon, and the unexpected ways life changes us along the journey.

Those ideas eventually became my first novel, The Canvas We Share.

Although the story is set in the art world, it isn't really about art. It's about four lifelong friends trying to navigate love, loss, ambition, family, forgiveness, and the complicated relationships that connect us long after our lives take different paths. At its heart, it's a story about friendship and the realization that the greatest masterpiece we ever create isn't something hanging on a wall—it's the life we build with the people around us.

This blog is an extension of that idea.

Here you'll find stories from my life as an artist, thoughts on creativity, behind-the-scenes looks at writing The Canvas We Share, reflections on the people and experiences that inspire my work, and the occasional lesson I've learned—sometimes the hard way.

Whether you're here because you collect my artwork, discovered the novel, attended one of my exhibitions, or simply stumbled across this page, I'm glad you're here.

I hope you'll pull up a chair, stay awhile, and join the conversation.

After all, every life tells a story.

And every story becomes part of the canvas we share. The Canvas We Share

Hi Bradley,

I finished a quick read of all of your Inside the Art blogs, before I now take a quiet moment to re-read each one in turn. So, I’d like to share with you my responses to your first blog (below). after I wipe my moist eyes (Yah – I’m a crier too). My German descent mill working mother, had sort of a crude, and funny way (at least I thought it funny) of describing this: "My bladder is too close to my eyes”.
************************************************************************
There is a quality in your writing that mirrors what moved me so deeply in your book,"The Canvas We Share", the revealing and vulnerable way that you expose yourself as an artist, as a person, and why you create. You write about being an artist as inseparable from being human, shaped by love loss, fear, hope – all the "moments in between” the milestones, as you poetically described in your September 16th blog, a sincere, unguarded and authentic style that is unquestionably yours. (I know I jumped ahead of the first blog a bit, but it felt right to do so.)

I admire the sincerity in your writing and your art (having viewed your artwork online), including the titles of your paintings which reflect your creative journey in simple expressions on living your life. Your reflections in this blog were why I recently found myself returning to something that has always been a quiet, steady part of me: my art. It feels like coming home. After teaching yoga therapy for many years, and surviving three cancers, this revisited creative chapter in my life fulfils the need to reconnect with something essential, something that gives me raison d’etre. I felt that resonance in your words, and I’m grateful for this connection.

Thank you for continuing to share your thoughts in an open and vulnerable way. No doubt your blogs will invite other artists to connect with you as well. We need this “canvas to share” as much as paint, clay, etc. I look forward to re-reading, during future quiet moments, the blogs you’ve written, as well as those that follow.

Lastly, I want to add that being included in National Juried Abstracts in America Exhibition was/is both humbling and energizing. It was not only an artistic and meaningful milestone for me, but a personal one, because it came from someone who understands how profoundly, in unspoken words, that art can transform a life.

Warmly, Pat Dunning

Inside the Art is a look beyond the finished work. Into the thoughts, emotions, stories, struggles, and moments that shape what I create. Whether through paint, poetry, writing, or simply navigating life, this is where I share a little of what happens before the world ever sees the finished piece.
