Depression comes in all different forms.
Sometimes it builds slowly, quietly taking pieces of you along the way. A little energy. A little confidence. A little joy. Sometimes it doesn't give you that warning. Sometimes it crashes into your life all at once. It can live quietly in the back of your mind, waiting for something from your past to come knocking. A memory. A loss. A failure. A familiar feeling you thought you had buried years ago. And suddenly, you're fighting a battle you thought you had already won. Depression can be obvious - the tears rolling down someone's face, the person who can't get out of bed, the person finally saying, I need help. But it can also hide incredibly well. It can laugh at your jokes. It can go to work. It can answer emails, make dinner, take care of everyone else, and ask how your day was. It can look you directly in the eyes and say, I'm fine. That's the part we don't always understand. What we see of another person is often just the tip of the iceberg. We see the smile, the job, the family, the accomplishments, the conversation at the grocery store. We don't see everything beneath the surface. We don't see the memories they carry. The losses they haven't made peace with. The fear. The exhaustion. The nights they couldn't sleep. The mornings they didn't want to get up. The conversations they had inside their own head just to convince themselves to keep moving. We don't see the battles they fought before they ever walked through the door. Trauma doesn't follow rules. It doesn't care how old you are, how successful you've become, how much you're loved, or how much time has passed. Pain is pain. Physical or emotional, visible or invisible…it wears you down. And I know this because I've lived on both sides of that surface. The part people can see, and everything they can't. So please, don't judge me today. Because you don't know the demons I fought to get here. You don't know the battles I lost. You don't know the battles I won. And you don't know how much of me it took simply to be standing here... Today. Please don't lose hope in me because of one moment that overwhelmed me. Don't define me by the day I couldn't carry everything I normally carry. Don't mistake exhaustion for weakness. And don't judge me because sometimes it takes everything I have just to be here. Maybe that's something we should remember when we look at each other. When you're living those ordinary days and you notice someone struggling, don't immediately try to fix them. Maybe they don't need fixing. Maybe they don't need advice. Maybe they don't need someone telling them what they should change, how they should feel, this is just part of life, or reminding them of everything they have to be grateful for. Maybe they just need someone willing to sit beside them in the moment they're in. Let love fill your heart. Let hope fill the space between you. And let them know something incredibly simple: I'm glad you're here. Because sometimes being here is the victory. Sometimes getting out of bed is the victory. Sometimes making it through another day is enough. We spend so much of our lives believing we have to be strong. That we have to keep moving, keep producing, keep smiling, keep telling everyone we're fine. But we don't always have to be fine. It's OK to hurt. It's OK to struggle. It's OK to ask for help. It's OK to admit that today is heavier than yesterday. And it's OK to not be OK. Tomorrow can be about healing. Tomorrow can be about getting stronger. Tomorrow can be about taking another step. But today? Today, maybe we simply allow ourselves, and each other, to exist without judgment. Because we don't need perfection. We don't always need fixing. Sometimes we just need compassion. Sometimes we just need someone beside us. Sometimes we just need to know that despite everything hiding beneath the surface, someone still sees us. And sometimes... OK is enough today.
